Job Description:
The Health Occupations Teacher (Health & Medical Sciences) will develop students' academic and clinical skills through academic courses of study and implements, monitors, and evaluates a quality competency-based program implementing district approved curriculum; documents teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addresses specific educational needs of students; provides feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc. The teacher will collaborate with colleagues at GW-SMHS to ensure the students are meeting college requirements. This 10-month, 195 day Licensed position, reports to the School Principal.
The Governor's Health Sciences Academy (GHSA) at Alexandria City High School is offered in partnership with The George Washington University-School of Medicine & Health Sciences (GW-SMHS). Students enrolled in the program pursue one of seven health-related pathways that lead to an industry certification. All academy courses are taught for dual enrollment credit through GW-SMHS with students graduating with 16-18 college credits. Students have the option to enter the workforce or pursue higher education after graduating from high school. Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree; Master’s degree required in nursing, biology, chemistry, education, or related health and medical science field. Dual Enrollment courses will be taught.
- Certificates & Licenses: A Valid Virginia Department of Education PostGraduate License, with an endorsement in a related field, A Technical Professional License, with a Health and Medical Sciences endorsement perferred, or eligibility to obtain the License with the appropriate endorsement upon hiring.
- Experience: Job related within specialized field, with increasing levels of responsibility.
Essential Functions:
- Develop and update lesson plans, course assignments and assessments in partnership with GW-SMHS faculty based on the state Health and Medical Science curriculum.
- Facilitate clinical placement of students, through collaboration with university and industry partners.
- Collaborate with administration to provide industry certification testing for students.
- Serve on a GHSA sub-committee and attend bi-annual meeting. Participate in other sub-committees where appropriate.
- Participate in GHSA recruiting events, and promote program to perspective students and parents and at least one day of the Summer Bridge Program and be compensated at the standard rate for this work.
- Review and develop curriculum during the summer and be compensated at the standard rate for this work.
- Organize and participate in academy and career related activities such as industry speakers and field trips.
- Teach other foundation health and medical sciences classes where needed.
- Provide students’ opportunities to develop and apply leadership, social, civic, and health care skills are provided through Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA), the Career and Technical Student Organization for health science education.
- Plan student assignments to meet academic objectives and different learning styles.
- Prepares a variety of written materials (grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student mastery.
- Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject specific assignments to provide an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
- Adapts classroom work to provide students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
- Administers developmental testing programs, subject specific assessments, etc. to assess student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans.
- Participates in a variety of meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
- Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations and achievements and develop methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
- Promotes communication with affiliating agency administration, staff, students, parents and clients.
- Counsels students to promote optimal participation and performance.
- Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to maintain personal safety of students, provide a positive learning environment and adhere to Education Code and school policies.
- Maintain teacher certification as per requirements of the Virginia Department of Education.
- Adhere to Alexandria City High School policies and regulations.
- Adhere to affiliating agencies policies and regulations.
- Maintain current industry related certifications required for the position.
- May perform other additional duties or tasks as designated by supervisor.
