Job Description
The Science Coach provides supplemental science instruction and coaching support at Mount Vernon Community School. The science coach enchances science instruction by supporting teachers through additional science instruction/remediation with students, feedback on planning and implementation of engaging and rigorous science lessons, and support with implementation of new science adoption materials.
This position reports to the Principal.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.
Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license with an endorsement in Elementary Education, or eligibility to obtain one.
Experience:
- A minimum of three to five years of successful teaching experience.
- Knowledge of current research in instructional coaching, curriculum trends in instruction, teacher effectiveness, differentiated instruction, student learning, and best practices in instruction.
- Knowledge of a variety of assessments and familiarity with state assessments.
- Preferred experience working successfully with linguistically and culturally diverse learners.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills, including giving and receiving constructive feedback.
- Proven ability to work cooperatively and effectively with colleagues, including the ability to create and nurture a professional community of adult learners.
- Evidence of continuous learning and a commitment to participate in professional growth opportunities and self-reflection on professional practices.
- Demonstrated the ability to organize and prioritize responsibilities, projects, and tasks.
- Demonstrated expertise in effective and collaborative oral and written communication.
- Science instructional background required.
Essential Functions:
- Provide targeted professional learning opportunities to teachers by:
- Providing feedback on instruction and lesson plans;
- Modeling exemplary lessons, instructional practices as needed;
- Connecting teachers with professional development resources.
- Provide teachers with access to science equipment and instructional resources to ensure the implementation of engaging hands-on science lessons.
- Provide supplementary science instruction and remediation for students.
- Assist in the implementation of assessment systems and protocols for elementary school science including common assessments, benchmarks, and other assessments.
- Collaborate with school staff to analyze student data around science achievement (including SOL, benchmarks, and common assessments).
- Attend meetings and on-going trainings as required
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Clearances:
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
- Tuberculosis Skin Test.
Public Health Compliance
- Must follow safety and health protocols.
