The Student Achievement Coordinator is responsible for developing and coordinating programs and initiatives to close the achievement gap for underrepresented students. This role focuses on working directly with students, division staff, school staff,  parents and families to implement effective strategies and support systems that promote academic and behavioral success for underrepresented student populations.  

The Student Achievement Coordinator provides expert consultancy in these areas for senior leadership, departments, schools, and external partners on behalf of the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership and Student Services and Equity.  This role also supports the division and schools in being transformative agents in the lives of students and empowers students, teachers, support staff, families, and community members to create welcoming learning environments that spark academic growth, student interest, and passion.

 

This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Instructional Support

 

Qualifications:  

 

Education: Master’s degree in related field such as education, counseling, social work, psychology, academic achievement, or urban education.

 

Certificates & Licenses: A valid Virginia Department of Education license is required, or eligibility to obtain one.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years job related or teaching experience preferred in education, program coordination, or a related area, with a focus on working with underachieving populations.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of race and socioeconomic theory and practice to support schools, and strategies to close the academic achievement gap.
  • Experience in educational pedagogy, including programs for special education (particularly inclusion models), underrepresented populations, and English Learners.
  • Strong understanding of the challenges faced by underrepresented students to include trauma-informed practices and effective strategies to address these challenges.
  • Excellent data analysis skills utilizing the multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) and the ability to translate data analysis into problem-solving that produces actionable plans.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • A performance record that demonstrates high integrity, vision, enthusiasm, and a strong commitment to diverse schools.

Essential Functions:

 

Program Development and Coordination

  • Develop, implement, and manage programs designed to improve the academic achievement of underrepresented students.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders to design interventions and support systems for underrepresented students. 
  • Works collaboratively with the Departments of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership, Student Services and Equity, and Accountability and Research to assess and provide data-based decision-making regarding the division-wide achievement gap.
  • Support classroom teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, and building leaders with research-based intervention to close the academic achievement gap.
  • Work with all curriculum writers to monitor, encourage, and ensure the inclusion of diversity and social justice issues in the PK-12 curriculum and instructional resources. 
  • Collaborate with division and school staff to design and implement evidence-based intervention programs targeting underrepresented students.
  • Coordinate with staff across division departments who are responsible for implementing programs related to closing the achievement gap to ensure seamless integration of initiatives. 
  • Collaborate with division offices to ensure that an achievement gap lens is consistently applied to organizational development work.
  • Participates in school-based site visits and provides feedback to school leaders regarding underrepresented student achievement.

Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Collect and analyze data on student performance, attendance, and other relevant metrics to identify achievement gaps and assess program effectiveness.
  • Monitor academic and behavioral data of underrepresented students, in collaboration with school staff, in order to increase positive learning behaviors and ensure student achievement.
  • Prepare detailed reports on student achievement, program outcomes, and progress toward closing the achievement gap for division and school leadership.
  • Use data insights to inform strategic planning and decision-making processes at the division and school levels.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for school leadership and stakeholders on the progress and outcomes of underrepresented student achievement initiatives.

Collaboration and Capacity Building:

  • Work closely with school principals, teachers, and counselors to create a collaborative approach to addressing the needs of underrepresented students.
  • Facilitate regular meetings with division and school staff to discuss progress, share best practices, and develop action plans for continuous improvement.
  • Support schools in implementing and sustaining culturally responsive teaching practices and inclusive curricula.

Family and Community Engagement:

  • Develop and implement strategies to engage parents and families of underrepresented students, providing them with resources and support to enhance their children's academic success.
  • Organize workshops, information sessions, and communication channels to keep parents informed and involved in their children's education.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school division and families, addressing concerns and facilitating access to community resources and services.
  • Build partnerships with community organizations to provide additional support and opportunities for underrepresented students.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Establish and maintain systems for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and initiatives designed to support underrepresented students.
  • Adjust strategies and interventions based on evaluation results and feedback from division and school staff, and parents.
  • Provide regular updates to division leadership on progress and areas for improvement.

Advocacy and Policy Development:

  • Advise on policies and programs to ensure that all students, especially students in underrepresented populations, have access to learn and thrive in an emotionally and physically safe learning environment. 
  • Advocate for policies and practices that promote equity and inclusion within the school.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of school policies that address the needs of underrepresented students.

Clearances

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance

  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
